Which types of yoga are right for me?

The range of yoga styles is vast, and ever expanding. All yoga styles have their own starting point, technique and focus. Thus, there is something for every yoga practitioner. In this blog, I'll tell you more about six popular yoga styles.

The word yoga is derived from Sanskrit, and the meaning boils down to connection. Connection is about body and mind, among other things. While many people think of yoga as relaxation or sports, it is more of a way of life or philosophy. So yoga is more than just doing some exercises.

"Yoga is more than an exercise, it is a way of life or philosophy."

The most important thing is to find a style of yoga that suits you; that way you will get the most enjoyment out of your yoga practice.

Yin Yoga

Yin yoga is a slow form of yoga for quiet postures, and the asanas (body positions) are held for longer periods of time; three to five minutes. People with stiff connective tissue can benefit greatly from Yin Yoga. Yin Yoga can also have a healing effect for people who have lost the balance between Yin and Yang. In our busy lives, the Yang energy is often dominant. Yin Yoga can help you to regain this balance.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha yoga is based on a consistency of asanas and breathing techniques. This style of yoga is very suitable for anyone who wants to find the piece of mind and peace within themselves and develop more flexibility in their body.

Ashtanga (vinyasa) yoga

Ashtanga yoga is a style of yoga that is performed at a brisk pace. Traditionally, there are only six Ashtanga sessions, consisting of forty yoga postures that are followed in quick succession. Ashtanga yoga is interesting if you would like to get in better shape, improve your breathing, build strength, become more flexible and experience more peace and relaxation.

Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra literally means 'yoga sleep'. During Yoga Nidra, you are only lying on your back in savasana and your consciousness is between waking and sleeping. This state you normally reach only in your deep sleep. Not only bad sleepers and restless souls benefit from Yoga Nidra, because during this special form of yoga you enter the deepest state of relaxation. This gives you tremendous physical and mental rest. It is super convenient to place a lavender eye pillow over your eyes.

Kundalini yoga

During Kundalini yoga we work with and around the chakras. Chakras are basically applicable to every yoga form, but in this mystical style of yoga, even more attention is paid to them. Chanting, meditation and extensive pranayama exercises are an important part of the sessions.Kundalini Yoga is very suitable for people who want to grow on a spiritual level and consciously work with the energy and chakras within themselves.

Yang yoga

Yang yoga is one of the most intense styles of yoga. It works with the body's own strength. During a Yang yoga session you are always looking for ways to use your energy and strength in a positive way. For people who experience a lot of stress and pressure in their daily lives and struggle with stress related complaints, but also for athletes, yoga full body stretch is a perfect fit. The classes are all about letting go of striving, allowing your body and mind to recharge and recover.
